Smart Energy and Your Business Print E-mail
Wednesday, 23 June 2010 20:21

If you’re a manufacturer in the polymer industry in Ohio, life might get a lot more cost-effective
for you, thanks to the Smart Energy Program directed by PolymerOhio and funded through the
Ohio Department of Development (ODOD). This program offers the chance to have your facility
energy-audited so recommendations can be implemented for significant energy cost savings.
Small-to-medium-size manufacturers (SMEs) with up to 80 employees represent in excess of 50
percent of polymer industry employment and consume disproportionately more energy than
other industries’ processors.

Piranha Technology Soars Ahead Print E-mail
Tuesday, 20 July 2010 11:39
Microscopic carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been a huge R&D focus because they can impart strength and weight reduction – and other needed materials characteristics – to polymers. But it’s still big news when a nanocomposite product makes a big spash entering the realm of commercialized products. Columbus (OH)-based Zyvex Performance Materials has literally made such a big splash recently by introducing its Piranha unmanned surface vessel (USV).

University Collaborators in Third Frontier Projects Find Many Opportunities to Work Together Print E-mail
Monday, 21 June 2010 12:19
The Ohio State University (OSU) and the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) have proven to be excellent performers over the last 5 to 6 years in several Ohio Third Frontier grants, including:
Collectively, just these four Third Frontier investments have created over 450 new jobs with average salaries above $57,000, plus over $220 million in new product sales. Further, these four collaborations have attracted over $200 M in Federal and industry funds to the state and attracted or started 10 new companies. In addition, through collaboration with IDCAST, one Dayton company has grown its federal government portion of sensor revenue from $3 M a year to over $50 M a year in four years. Such success has generated so much media excitement that now the WCIs (CMPND and IDCAST) and the Third Frontier Research Commercialization Program (RCP) are considered models for University-Industry-Federal Lab collaborations. For Ohio, such statistics reflect major accomplishments for the universities and for the State!

National Export Initiative Print E-mail
Monday, 28 June 2010 16:51
A late March 2010 event launched the President’s National Export Initiative (NEI) in Ohio at Cardinal Health (Columbus).  Senator Sherrod Brown introduced the featured speaker, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke (a former Governor of Washington).  Other officials from the Ohio Department of Development (ODOD) and U.S. Department of Commerce and Great Lakes Network director were present.

This Initiative is positioned to double U.S. exports in five years.  Former President Bush indicated that $1B in exports translates into roughly 13,000 total jobs.  Research on export policy indicates that $1B in exports translates into 6,000 manufacturing jobs.  Since roughly 95 percent of the world’s consumers live outside of the U.S. , export presents a huge opportunity for U.S. exporters, who typically focus on one company only (this applies to roughly 60 percent of all companies that do export business).

Material Flow Survey of Biobased Residential Building Materials Print E-mail
Monday, 14 June 2010 12:59
The Ohio BioProducts Innovation Center (OBIC) recently conducted a survey to assess development intent and potential future interest in biobased residential building products within Ohio and across the nation. The survey was designed to provide data that could project the potential for substituting biobased residential building products for their petroleum-based counterparts. Of particular interest were such materials as paint, foam sealant, fiberglass doors, garage doors, fiberglass windows, sofas, and countertops.

An interactive survey was developed by OBIC and implemented by Harris Interactive. Questions were structured to assess homeowner attitudes regarding green products and to determine willingness to pay more for building products that incorporate plant-based raw materials. The survey was sent to homeowners in Ohio and across the entire United States.
