Carbon Nanotube Thermoplastic Composites … a Strategic Growth Opportunity for Plastic Processors Print E-mail
Friday, 19 February 2010 14:21
In the coming years, nanotechnology will revolutionize products with which we are familiar today and will enable the development of new products and materials. The ability to tailor materials and their properties and functions by engineering these materials at the nanoscale will impact products and the way that we live on a broad scale. PolyOne is one of the companies that is developing and offering a range of thermoplastic compounds that incorporate nanomaterials.

At the Nano-Network meeting on March 10th, PolyOne will describe some of these new nanocomposites and the impact that these materials might have. This presentation will describe the development of thermoplastic composites that incorporate carbon nanotubes, one of the promising materials for higher strength and increased functionality. PolyOne will describe the development process, the features and benefits of these new nanocomposites and the expectations for future nanocomposite materials development.

This event is being sponsored by PolyOne and Zyvex Performance Materials.

Tom Norton, President of Turtle Plastics in Lorain, OH knows a thing or two about recycling materials. He has been in the business of recycling since 1980, having developed the first MRF in the state of Ohio. The process of recycling materials evolved into making products from the materials. Specifically, Turtle Plastics makes modular matting and industrial plastic cribbing from PVC. The PVC primarily comes from the automobile industry's waste - their trash is Turtle's treasure.

PolymerOhio’s Purchasing And Shared Services (PASS) Program includes United Shippers Alliance, a non-profit organization that leverages collective purchasing of trucking charges so that smaller organizations can ship less than a truckload at competitive prices. Working together with MESCA Freight Services, United Shippers is poised to assist Ohio’s plastics industry as it re-energizes and continues its amazing growth, even during the waning economic downturn. “Working together, United Shippers and MESCA have significant buying power that we enable for the hundreds of small-to-medium-size companies that belong to our program,” said Gene Graves, Executive Director, United Shippers. “Using a transportation management system access through a secure website, we can view industry-wide pricing, rate-shop, and schedule to optimize the charges and delivery options for our members…” (which includes companies accessing this service through the PASS Program).
