Sustainability: Both a Business and a Communications Strategy Print E-mail
Monday, 29 November 2010 14:43
Owens Corning (OC) was in a lot of good company in 2009; we dropped in sales due to economy, said Frank O’Brien-Bernini, VP of Sustainability at OC, at a recent 2010 Emerging Technology Forum sponsored by PolymerOhio. “What’s new, however, is that OC has been on path of sustainability since we set our 2002 baseline,” Bernini said. “We have been in a do-say mode (avoiding say-do or just say), wanting to get a few years of sustainability successes under our belt before talking about it.” Obviously, others were noting OC’s progress. For example, Newsweek’s green rankings placed OC at 56 in a list of the top 200 companies making good sustainability progress. In fact, quite a few companies ahead of OC in the list are financial companies, O’Brien-Bernini notes, and they do not really “have a manufacturing environmental footprint.”

Executing IP Strategy with ICM Process Implementation Print E-mail
Monday, 22 November 2010 15:20
Intellectual property (IP) is a core asset, especially for companies just beginning a successful growth curve. However, IP must be managed with great care and future focus as well a keen eye for creating and protecting more IP as part of a company’s business strategy. At a recent Emerging Technology Forum, held in Columbus (OH) by PolymerOhio and other industry organizations, Bruce Story, Senior Advisor at ipCapital Group, discussed IP strategy. “The difference between leaving IP development to the ad hoc process dependent on the initiative of the inventor and using IP strategy to guide R&D and new business development can be immense,” he said.

Significant New Use Rules for Carbon Nanotubes Print E-mail
Monday, 01 November 2010 12:16
When the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed Significant New Use Rules (SNURs) for both multi- and single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in November 2009 , it was an expected announcement among most companies that manufacture or use CNTs in their businesses. The EPA was acting on its belief that both generically-identified classes of CNTs “may cause lung effects,” as well as “health effects via dermal exposure.” Citing a purported “lack of data on the potential health risks” posed by CNT exposures, EPA proposes designating the manufacture, import, or processing of CNTs without the use of National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)-approved, full-face respirators and protective clothing as a “significant new use” of nanotubes under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).

Creating Biobased Resins and Composites for Green Buildings Print E-mail
Monday, 22 November 2010 15:11
With all the marketplace interest in so-called “green buildings,” there is not necessarily one clear definition of what comprises a green building. Starting with a solid working definition, speakers at a summer Emerging Technology Forum, sponsored by PolymerOhio, and held in Columbus, began a presentation by saying that a green building is defined by its energy efficiency, how the structure improves environment quality for inhabitants, and for how the building reduces impact on environment. The caveat is that such an evaluation must come via an established rating system from a credible third party.
