New Open Source Online Library Developed by LIFT and IACMI
The first open source online library developed and designed by Manufacturing USA institutes has recently been unveiled. Dubbed the LIFT-IACMI Online Learning Hub (“The Hub”), its purpose is to provide educators and students anywhere in the United States access to in-demand manufacturing tools and materials related to lightweight metals and composite materials.
Lightweight Innovations for Tomorrow (LIFT) and the Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI) have developed The Hub to serve a wide array of sectors, including transportation, energy and defense. The searchable database can be filtered by such elements as age group, education level, principal material, topic and format of the material.
There are expected to be nearly 3.5 million U.S. manufacturing jobs available over the next decade, but projections are that approximately 2 million of those will go unfilled due to the a lack of skills and training to fill them. LIFT and IACMI developed The Hub with the objective of preventing the skills gap from growing any wider.
According to Emily DeRocco, Education and Workforce Development Director at LIFT, “As our two national manufacturing innovation institutes are breaking new ground in lightweight metals and composite materials, education and job training for manufacturing careers will need to incorporate new information and develop new skills for workforce success.”
