On Friday, March 2nd, the dean of the University of Akron’s College of Polymer Science and Engineering (CPSE), Eric Amis, announced he would relinquish his position in June of this year. This is just the latest in a reduction of staff that the college has seen over the past two to three years–staff that has not been replaced by the financially strapped university.

Provisional counts compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that as of June 2017, Ohio was ranked 3rd in the United States at a count of 5,256 for most opiod overdose deaths. Only Florida at 5,604 deaths, and Pennsylvania at 5,392, had more. It is obvious by the numbers that Ohio is in an opiod crisis.

It’s common knowledge that eventually the batteries in our cellphones, cameras and laptops weaken and the time between charging them shortens. An assistant professor of polymer science at the University of Akron is overseeing a project that will change that.
